The Closer, Jan. 2026

Here are two versions of this painting. I based this on a photo I took of a turkey vulture on a piece of driftwood at Cumberland Island on the Georgia coast. The first version (at the bottom) I chose to have a more simplified background so that the bird would be the focus. I like it ok, but afterward I realized I wished it had had a more ominous tone. I remembered how on that day the clouds were just thin enough that the sun shone through them. I attempted to use the transparent quality of the watercolor to capture that eerie feel in the second one. Another difference is the first one was on hot pressed (smooth) paper whereas the second is with cold pressed (rougher) paper. It's not often I will completely repaint something, but in this case I was happy I did because I prefer the second one.
