During most of my 25-year career at EPA I've commuted downtown on work days to the MARTA Five Points Station, the central station for all train lines in the city. It was built in the late 1970s in a style that was perhaps viewed as modernist in its day, but has since often been described as "brutalist". It has always seemed run-down, with features frequently in disrepair. I've always viewed it as a bit of an embarrassment for Atlanta, as it is frequently the first impression for many out-of-towners. When I've travelled to other major cities, their central train stations are usually very nice and impressive. Still I've spent so much time at Five Points over the years I've kind of developed a strange fondness for it. When it was announced that a major renovation would be undertaken in 2025, I took some photos of the station to capture the way it was before the renovation, and this painting is based on one of those photos. Despite my overall dislike of the station, there is some beauty in the lines, lights and shadows of the building especially on the ground floor, which is some credit to the architects.
